ICSI Treatment
One of the ways to assist the reproduction procedure is the Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI). In this process, a healthy living sperm is injected into the cytoplasm or centre of the ovum.
Usually, conceiving involves the Sperm travelling all through the fallopian tubes where it meets the egg cell. However, sometimes, the lining of the human eggs could be thick, which thus hinders the penetration of the Sperm. Therefore, the male gamete fails to enter the centre or cytoplasm of the ovum. Otherwise when there is significant abnormalities in semen parameter/s , ICSI helps a single living sperm to directly enter the ovum’s cytoplasm and fertilize the egg only to turn it into a zygote (fertilized egg cell).
The advantages of ICSI for treating male infertility
- Inadequate Sperm Count
- Inefficient movement of the Sperm
- Low-grade Sperm quality
- Azoospermia
- However, note that ICSI could also be performed in people with unexplained infertility issues. Those opting for a Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT) could also try ICSI. Sometimes, ICSI is also chosen as an alternative to IVF.

Listed below are the steps involved in the ICSI procedure:
- Step 1:
- Semen and Egg Collection is done.
- Step 2:
- A single living Sperm is then picked with the help of a small needle called a injecting micropipette.Egg is then fixed with holding pipette.
- Step 3:
- With the help of a microscope and microinjectors, the Sperm is then carefully placed at the centre of the egg cell.
- Step 4:
- After fertilization occurs, the egg turns to an embryo, which continues to grow in a controlled environment at the laboratory for the next few days.
- Step 5:
- The embryo is then transferred to the uterus, which implants itself and results in pregnancy.
